Sharpening One Another

Sharpening One Another

October 5, 2026

Today’s Scripture: Proverbs 27:17

Proverbs tells us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

Anyone who has ever sharpened a blade knows that sharpening involves friction. It is not always comfortable, but it is necessary for growth. The same is true spiritually.

God often uses other people to sharpen our faith. Sometimes they encourage us. Sometimes they challenge us. Sometimes they ask difficult questions. Sometimes they lovingly point out areas where we need to grow. Healthy relationships help us become better followers of Jesus.

Left to ourselves, we often justify our weaknesses, overlook our blind spots, and settle into comfortable patterns. God uses trusted friends and spiritual mentors to help us see things we might otherwise miss.

Sharpening requires humility. It means being willing to receive feedback, correction, and encouragement. It means allowing others to speak truth into our lives.

At the same time, we are called to sharpen others. We encourage. We pray. We challenge. We help others continue moving toward Christ.

God never intended spiritual growth to happen in isolation. The people around you are not there by accident. Many of them are part of God’s process of shaping you into the person He created you to become.

When we embrace biblical community, we discover that growth often happens through the very relationships God has placed in our lives.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Who regularly sharpens your faith? What is one way you can encourage them today?

PRAYER

Lord, You use other people to sharpen my faith, even when the friction is uncomfortable. Give me the humility to receive feedback, correction, and encouragement. Help me see my blind spots through the trusted people You have placed in my life. And make me someone who sharpens others well, encouraging, praying, and challenging them toward You.
