Hungering for God

Hungering for God

October 3, 2026

Today’s Scripture: Matthew 5:6

Everyone hungers for something. Some people hunger for success. Others hunger for approval, comfort, achievement, security, or recognition. We naturally pursue whatever we believe will satisfy us.

Jesus makes a remarkable statement in the Sermon on the Mount: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”

Jesus is teaching that true satisfaction is found in God.

The problem is not that we hunger. The problem is often what we hunger for.

Many of the things we pursue promise fulfillment but leave us wanting more. Success never feels successful enough. Possessions never feel sufficient enough. Recognition never fully satisfies.

Only God can fill the deepest longings of the human heart. This is why spiritual habits matter. Bible reading, prayer, and fasting help redirect our hunger toward the One who can truly satisfy. They remind us that intimacy with God is not an obligation but a privilege.

As we spend time with Jesus, our desires begin to change. We become less dependent on temporary things and more dependent on Him. We discover that His presence brings peace, purpose, and joy that circumstances cannot provide.

The goal of spiritual disciplines is not religious activity. The goal is relationship. The more we hunger for God, the more we discover that He is exactly what our hearts have been searching for all along.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

What has been competing for your attention and affection lately? Ask God to increase your hunger for Him and help you seek Him first this week.

PRAYER

Father, You created me to hunger, yet so often I hunger for things that cannot satisfy. Forgive me for chasing success, approval, and comfort when only You can fill the deepest longings of my heart. Increase my hunger and thirst for righteousness, and help me seek You first.
