Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
You must choose to work with God to enjoy your identity. These suggestions can help.
Create an identity statement. I have an entire front page in my daily planner to remind myself of my identity. The many truths there keep me from floundering. It starts like this: “I am the Beloved and my Father is pleased with me. The ones who know me best love and respect me most. My life consistently makes a God-blessed difference. My Father is enabling me to live an intentional, worthwhile, motivated, and motivating life. I love and serve like Jesus.”
Carry your “I AM” statements with you. Consider making an “I AM” index card or two with your most significant statements from your Father about you. You know when and where you are most likely to struggle. Put it in your car, on your mirror, on your desk, or in your wallet.
Start your day in God’s Word. Even five minutes can shift your perspective. Do it daily. Consistency matters. Psalm 1:2-3 NLT tells us that those who meditate on it day and night are “like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.” I love to do this in the morning. It replaces lies with God’s truth and shifts my perspective before the world has a chance to influence me. Whenever it is, find a time that works for you and make it regular. It will ground and grow you.
Practice regular self-reflection. Before decisions, ask, “Does this choice align with who God says I am?” Guard your reaction to and dependence on social media. Continually guard your heart from seeking validation from people more than from your Father.
Live in your identity and purpose and encourage your family to join you. Speak words to them continually that lift up their identity and our purpose as representatives of Jesus. The sign as our children were growing still hangs above our door: “THE YOUNG FAMILY IS A TEAM. Together we will live with love, integrity, and obedience to Jesus, and will make a positive, joyful difference in the lives of others.”
Participate regularly in a community of like-minded people. Your healthy church community, your friends, your Bible study must be the major influences and shapers in your life. You can’t maintain your identity while marinating in toxicity.
- Stand and live tall. He is your Father, and HE says you are His and that’s enough.
