Living by faith is something we talk easily about when we aren’t that aware of the need for faith. Things are going along as usual, things are relatively calm, no real crisis seems to be erupting, and we have a fairly good idea how the next period of time will go. Relative certainty about a number of things, particularly our environment, makes “living by faith” come more naturally.
However, living by faith in uncertain times means something more substantive and alive. And uncertain times are certainly where we are today. Living by faith is actively anchoring your stability in God’s unchanging character rather than circumstances. It means choosing trust over fear. It involves personal choices to actively rely on Scripture with gratitude and embracing God’s sovereign plan even when the future is unclear.
Living by faith in these uncertain times requires us to …
Embrace the Unknown: Living by faith is not the absence of doubt. It doesn’t mean we never have questions or doubts; it means trusting God while you doubt. It is "holding on" when you don’t see the path forward. It is choosing to remain steady when you don’t know the outcome.
Focus on God's Character: God tells us He is a solid, unshakable rock and a very present helper in time of trouble. He does not disappear when life becomes chaotic. He is even more noticeable and strongly supportive. He will be faithful and more than capable.
Shift from Fear to Trust: Rather than being paralyzed by fear, faith allows for action and peace. This is not natural. It is a deliberate, intentional choice you may need to make several times a day. God will help you when you fix your heart to trust.
What are some actionable, practical steps to take in uncertain times?
Read Scripture: Immerse yourself in promises and stories of God's faithfulness.
Practice Gratitude: Shift your focus from what is missing to what God has provided. Gratitude is the healthiest human emotion, and it enables every other good thing.
Connect with Community: Share struggles with others rather than isolation. We were built for community.
Pray Actively: Bring your fears and questions to God. He understands you and cares.
Cast all your cares on him, because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7
